As part of Budget 2021, the Government has invested $56.12 million in science, research and innovation.

The package of funding provides $21.95 million over four years to the Research and Education Advanced Network New Zealand (REANNZ), $10.17 million over two years available for investment in two Regional Research Organisations, and $24 million over four years to support MPI and MBIE activity to accelerate and increase agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation research and development, including new on-farms tools.
REANNZ has received funding to support its ongoing operations and provide for upgrades to critical network infrastructure. REANNZ is the high performance telecommunications network for the research sector. It is foundational infrastructure enabling Crown Research Institutes, Universities and other members to perform cutting edge, high impact, and internationally connected research activity and core science services. This includes supporting research informing the COVID-19 response and recovery.
Funding has been provided to support the Bragato Research Institute and Xerra Earth Observation Institute to become self-sustaining, independent research institutes. The Regional Research Institutes are create jobs in the regions, and further enhance regional advantage in New Zealand by stimulating leading edge, industrially exploitable and commercially focused research.
Funding is also being provided to accelerate and increase agricultural greenhouse gas mitigation research and development, and increase the options and tools available to farmers and growers to cost-effectively reduce emissions on-farm. This is likely to accelerate widespread uptake of these technologies on New Zealand farms, to deliver immediate and lasting reductions in agricultural greenhouse gas emissions and cost-savings.
