About MIQ

Learn about the establishment of Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ), and the important role it played in protecting our people from a largely unknown, rapidly evolving virus. MIQ was one of the hardest parts of the pandemic, but it saved lives.

From 1 July 2023, national quarantine and isolation (referred to as MIQ) will transfer to the New Zealand health system.

Charges

Managed isolation and quarantine (MIQ) charges allow the Government to recover some of the costs for MIQ. The aim of the charges is to share the costs in a way that fairly reflects the benefits to both the New Zealand public of having a robust system, and those who leave and enter the country.

COVID-19 response recognition award

Registrations for the COVID-19 Response Recognition Award have now closed. Thank you to all those who worked at MBIE Managed Isolation and Quarantine (MIQ), Immigration New Zealand (INZ) or with one of our MIQ partners for applying.

National quarantine and isolation in the future

From 1 July 2023, national quarantine and isolation (referred to as MIQ) will transfer to the New Zealand health system.
