The Digital Data and Insights group leads, connects, and strengthens MBIE's core data and insights, digital and technology capabilities.

The Advisor Management and Modelling works with the manager to support the ingestion (collection), storage (data warehouse) and curation (management of datasets) of all MBIE data. 

The Advisor Management and Modelling works closely with the Partnership and Programme teams to understand the needs of business groups and translates these into data models to support their business enablement. 

The Advisor Management and Modelling supports the implementation of MBIE’s Empowered by Data strategic roadmap

Personal specifications

  • Knowledge and experience across data modelling disciplines with an understanding of best practice principles.
  • Ability to successfully deliver output that meets client needs and supports their business enablement.
  • Evidence of comprehensive industry knowledge and experience of data management and modelling current and emerging technologies.
  • Proven ability to remain up to date on key technical changes and opportunities in their specialist area and proactively use this to continuously improve MBIE services.
  • Sound appreciation of corporate management disciplines, techniques and understanding of Government decision-making and operating procedures.
  • Qualification in a relevant field or extensive comparable experience.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Credit check required (yes).
  • Required to drive (no).
  • Police vetting (yes).
  • Ability to obtain / maintain a Confidential security clearance.
  • You will have experience in the field of data warehousing.
  • You will have the ability to design and develop smart business solutions from complex data sources using the tools utilised by the Warehousing team.
  • You will have experience using programming languages to wrangle, mutate and present data.
  • You will be confident engaging with our diverse stakeholders.
  • You will have clear communication skills. A large part of this role is understanding the needs of our stakeholders and communicating complex ideas to them. Therefore, being confident and able to clearly communicate complex ideas is a key skill required for this role.
  • You will enjoy working in a heavily team focused environment. The team strongly believes we work best when we work together.
  • You will be a passionate learner, always keen to pick up new skills and understand new ideas.

Critical areas of success

  • Develops and defines MBIE’s approach and practice for data modelling, ensuring high standards of data integrity, quality and accuracy are achieved.
  • Ensures MBIE has effective ways to extract and manipulate data that results in meaningful data which empowers wider MBIE.
  • Ensure data management / modelling structures are accessible in formats which give MBIE teams the critical insights required for them to be confident in their decision making.
  • Engage in a systematic and integrated way and share information with sectors that share strategic interests.
  • Ensure the application, integration and use of Te ao Māori and Te ao Māori practices in the work of the Branch and as such MBIE; tikanga, Te Reo and an appreciation of the Treaty of Waitangi, Te Tiriti and the Treaty Principles.
  • Foster a customer-focused culture across the Branch.

Relationship management - work collaboratively with others to support the achievement of MBIE outcomes

  • Build strategic alliances with key government and non-government representatives to ensure MBIE’s views are influential in their decision-making.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with national and international organisations to identify and share best practice information and to promote the Ministry, its products, and services.
  • Lead any engagement programme(s) with identified influencers and key stakeholders.
  • Actively look for opportunities and synergies with internal and external stakeholders that focus on and meet customer needs.
  • Use a one organisation perspective when contributing to internal forums and governance bodies.
  • Represent whole-of-Ministry views and protect its reputation in external interactions.
