Have your say on the future of the electricity sector

Published: 04 May 2023

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) is asking for feedback on a set of draft assumptions about the future state of the electricity system, as part of the process for preparing our regular Electricity Demand and Generation Scenarios (EDGS) publication.

The EDGS publication is used by the Commerce Commission, as the agency responsible for assessing major investment proposals by Transpower. It is also used as a reference by the energy industry, researchers, and other interested parties.

EDGS explores potential future electricity demand, and the generation capacity needed to meet that demand, out to 2050. MBIE prepares several possible scenarios exploring potential future electricity demand and generation in New Zealand, allowing the Commerce Commission to assess Transpower’s planning proposals for future capital investment in the electricity transmission grid.

MBIE is seeking feedback to ensure that the potential scenarios presented, and resulting modelling accurately reflect the potential pathways forward that the electricity sector could take.

Submissions are open until 5pm, Monday 22 May 2023. MBIE will then analyse the submissions to inform its modelling for EDGS 2023 and will refine the draft assumptions based on feedback received through consultation.

Visit MBIE’s consultation page for more information on how to have your say.
