Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates
The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTEs) measure total visitor spending across New Zealand on a monthly basis. The estimates are produced across multiple dimensions to support regional and industry level analysis.
This release marks the first publication in the revised MRTE series and presents historical results from January 2023 to February 2026. The MRTEs will now be released on an ongoing monthly basis using a new methodology (see MRTE user guidance), which differs from the pre-2020 series and fully replaces the Tourism Electronic Card Transactions (TECT) measures.
This release presents historical Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates for:
- Total visitor spending in New Zealand
- Total visitor spending by region
- Total visitor spending by domestic and international visitors
Note: This month’s MRTE release does not include an industry breakdown. MBIE, our data supplier (Marketview), and relevant stakeholders are working to finalise industry allocation approaches that balance user needs with data privacy requirements.
