Extreme Weather Recovery Advice Fund
The Extreme Weather Recovery Advice Fund enables regional councils affected by the North Island extreme weather events in early 2023 to access science advice to inform their ongoing recovery efforts.
On this page
Up to $500,000 (excluding GST) is available to North Island regional councils to address the science needs arising from the severe weather events in early 2023, namely the Auckland Anniversary weekend floods and Cyclone Gabrielle.
Affected regional councils can request advice from research organisations for projects which translate and/or adapt hazard science, including the social, cultural and environmental and economic impacts of hazards.
Projects will inform recovery activities by providing affected regional councils with robust and defensible positions for addressing risk, giving decision-makers confidence around recovery activities and giving communities clarity on risk levels and mitigation options.
Available grants
We are inviting all affected North Island regional councils and the wider research, science and innovation sector to connect and propose projects that will deliver on their priorities.
3 types of advice grant are available:
- Small advice grants to help affected regional councils identify information needs or receive advice on science techniques to help them respond to extreme weather events.
- Medium advice grants for more detailed advice to assist councils to understand, interpret and respond to hazard issues at a local level.
- Large advice grants for consolidated hazard science advice to benefit multiple affected regional councils.
Proposals are assessed by the Regional Council Governance Committee who make recommendations to MBIE on which projects should be funded. Final funding decisions are made by MBIE’s General Manager, Science System Investment and Performance.
Funded projects
This list is updated regularly as new projects are funded and ongoing projects closed.
