Timeline and key documents for the Customer and Product Data Act

MBIE first consulted the public on this policy in 2020. This page includes the Cabinet papers and consultation documents that contributed towards the passage of the Customer and Product Data Act.

2020

From 5 August to 19 October 2020, MBIE consulted on options for establishing a consumer data right in New Zealand. We received 59 submissions.

2021

In June 2021, Cabinet agreed to the overarching policy settings for the Customer and Product Data Act.

2022

In July 2022, Cabinet agreed to more detailed policy settings for the Customer and Product Data Bill, such as the role of the Privacy Commissioner and the mechanisms for cost recovery.

2023

From June to 24 July 2023, MBIE consulted on an exposure draft of the Bill and accompanying discussion document. We received 54 submissions.

2024

In May 2024, Cabinet agreed to introduce the Bill in the House of Representatives.
