Current Energy Quarterly publication
The current edition of Energy Quarterly is for the April to June quarter (Q2) 2026. It was released on 10 September 2026. The next Energy Quarterly will be released on 10 December 2026.
Main highlights for this quarter
- The June 2026 quarter was marked by exceptionally strong renewable electricity generation, with renewables supplying 92% of total generation, supported by favourable hydro conditions and record geothermal output.
- For the first time on record, New Zealand generated more electricity from solar than coal over a 12-month period, reflecting continued growth in solar capacity and declining coal-fired generation.
- Thermal generation fell sharply, with gas-fired generation down 37.2% and coal-fired generation down 74.3%, as renewable output met a greater share of demand.
- Electricity demand increased 3.0% (301 GWh) to 10,211 GWh, led by higher agricultural demand due to increased irrigation pumping during dry conditions and stronger industrial consumption.
- The quarter included the first import for New Zealand's strategic diesel reserve, contributing to a 5.6% increase in total fuel imports, while overall fuel consumption fell 3.7%.
- Gas production and demand continued to decline, with net gas production down 19.5% and total gas consumption down 20.4%, largely due to reduced gas use for electricity generation and Methanex's planned outage.
- Coal imports fell 94% to their lowest level since the December 2011 quarter, while coal consumption reached a record low as renewable generation and industrial fuel-switching reduced demand.
- Energy prices increased across most fuels. Conflict in the Middle East disrupted global oil markets, contributing to 22% higher petrol prices and a 69% increase in retail diesel prices, while household electricity costs rose 10% due mainly to higher network charges.
