Energy Quarterly: 2018 Q3 report
ISSN 1178-2714 (online)
The New Zealand Energy Quarterly provides quarterly data and analysis on energy supply, demand, prices and associated greenhouse gas emissions. This publication is part of the suite of energy publications produced by the Energy and Building Trends Team of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment.
The main highlights for the September 2018 quarter are:
- Renewable sources accounted for 85% of electricity generation
- Hydro generation was up 9% compared to the September quarter 2017
- Coal fired generation was down 23% and gas fired generation was down 21% over the same period
- Reductions in production at Pohokura contributed to an overall 12% reduction in gas supply for the quarter
- Refinery production reached record levels after the maintenance operations were completed
- Higher crude oil prices drove fuel prices up for the quarter, with petrol being up 17% from September 2017, and diesel rising 31%.
Fuel monitoring
We have made an improvement to our energy prices data to account for the introduction of the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax on 1 July 2018. This represents an additional 10c/l (+GST) on petrol and diesel in the Auckland region. The Energy Quarterly fuel pricing series has incorporated a national weighted average using New Zealand’s population at 30 June 2018 as weights[1]. The outcome of this is that the Auckland Regional Fuel Tax has increased the average national duties, taxes and levies, by 3.47 c/l.
