Main highlights for this quarter

• Low rainfall and below average national hydro storage saw electricity generation from hydro fall to 5,866 GWh, a 19.2% decrease on the June 2023 quarter.
• Electricity generation from geothermal reached a record high this quarter, with 2143 GWh generated. Contributing to this was the Tauhara power station coming online in May 2024 ahead of final commissioning activities.
• The increase in geothermal generation was not enough to offset reductions in hydro generation. As a result, the renewable share of electricity generation fell to 81.3%, an 8.6% decrease from June 2023 quarter, as more generation from non-renewable sources was needed to meet demand.
• Coal-based electricity generation increased to 883 GWh for the quarter, compared to 144 GWh of generation in the same quarter last year. The 883 GWh from coal generation exceeded the 817 GWh from wind generation. This is the first time since the June 2021 quarter that coal generation surpassed wind generation.
• Net production of natural gas was down 19% from June quarter 2023. Less available natural gas supply saw a fall in gas use, with large users responding by continuing to operate at lower levels.
• The increased use of non-renewable sources saw emissions from electricity generation increase 169% on the previous June quarter, to their highest level since the June 2021 quarter.
