Electricity
Record levels of geothermal and solar generation, driven by growth in generation capacity and reduced reliance on thermal generation. As a result, 88.5% of electricity generated in 2025 came from renewable sources.
New Zealand's participation in the International Energy Programme
New Zealand is a member of the International Energy Agency (IEA) International Energy Programme. Membership of the IEA acts as “insurance” against disruption to international energy supplies.
Electricity Price Review
In 2018-19, the independent Electricity Price Review investigated whether the electricity market was delivering a fair and equitable price to consumers and considered improvements to future-proof the sector and its governance structures. In 2019-20, the Government established new workstreams to action many of the Review’s recommendations.
Coal
Production and exports increased following disruption to transport routes in 2025. Imports also increased as Genesis Energy continued to build its stockpile at the Huntly Power Station.
