SmartSat CRC collaboration with New Zealand
In 2024 New Zealand, through the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE), partnered with Australia's SmartSat Cooperative Research Centre (CRC) to advance joint research and innovation in space technologies. This strategic collaboration focuses on satellite systems, data analytics, and space-based services, and aims to build trans-Tasman capability in space science, engineering, and commercialisation. The partnership supports workforce development, joint missions, and knowledge exchange, positioning New Zealand as a key contributor to the global space economy.
NZ–NASA Collaboration: Catalyst Strategic Programme
In 2022, MBIE and NASA launched a joint Earth observation research programme. 5 projects have been scaled up with NZ$5.6 million in funding

Catalyst: Strategic – New Zealand – NASA Joint Research Programme in Earth Observation
NZ–Germany collaboration: MBIE & DLR
In 2018, the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) signed a Letter of Intent with the German Aerospace Centre (DLR). In 2020 MBIE established a programme with DLR to enable joint research in:
- Space systems
- Earth observation technologies
- Transport and energy innovation
Together, MBIE and DLR are supporting 8 joint research projects, with NZ teams receiving NZ$8 million over 3 years. These partnerships continue through the establishment of the Taiaho Observatory and the ongoing partnerships between RestoreLab and DLR on SAR research.
