About the programme
In August 2022, New Zealand and the United States of America signed a framework agreement on space cooperation, facilitating increased collaboration and connectivity between the two countries’ space sectors and research communities.
The NZ-NASA joint research programme was the first initiative under this framework, starting in 2023 with twelve feasibility studies where New Zealand research organisations partnered with NASA Centers to use Earth observation data to address science-based challenges faced by both countries in areas of natural hazards, water and earth systems, environmental modelling and biodiversity. In these feasibility studies, NZ and NASA partners worked together to develop and test their ideas while defining larger collaborative research projects.
Catalyst: Strategic – New Zealand – NASA Research Partnerships 2023
Building on the success of these feasibility studies, MBIE and NASA agreed to jointly support the scale up of five of these studies into larger collaborative research projects. New Zealand research teams will receive a total of NZ$5.6 million (GST excluded) funding over three years from the Catalyst Fund (Strategic). Projects commence from June 2025.
This investment will help build New Zealand’s science, innovation and technology capability and advance the New Zealand Space and Advanced Aviation Strategy by supporting the development of our space and advanced aviation sectors and further growing strategic relationships between New Zealand and NASA research organisations. NASA researchers have decades of experience in using remote sensing platforms from air and space to study changes in the Earth and its systems, and will be enormously beneficial for researchers in New Zealand, and the New Zealand sector more broadly.
The projects will collect and make available reliable scientific data from a unique part of the world, advancing NASA’s mission of better understanding our home planet and strengthening the partnership between New Zealand and the U.S.
