Update on Wednesday 23 September 2026
MBIE has updated its weekly fuel price monitoring methodology to reflect additional costs that fuel importers have faced due to the 2026 Middle East conflict.
The Commerce Commission, in consultation with fuel importers, has identified additional costs associated with importing and supplying fuel. MBIE has worked with the Commerce Commission to incorporate these costs in our weekly fuel price data.
To better reflect current market conditions and account for these additional costs, we have applied a fuel market adjustment to all fuel types from 27 February 2026. This has resulted in revisions to the importer cost, importer margin, and importer margin trend series.
More information on these changes can be found on our weekly fuel price monitoring methodology document.
Purpose
Our monitoring shows how recent movements in key factors, such as international oil prices, are affecting retail pump prices that consumers are facing in New Zealand.
This monitoring was a recommendation of the 2008 New Zealand Petrol Review to promote transparency in retail petrol and diesel pricing.

Review of the New Zealand Petrol Market
In 2008, Envisory (then Hale & Twomey) conducted a review of New Zealand’s petrol market, in response to a review performed by the Australian Competition & Consumer Commission (ACCC) review into the Australian petrol market. This review identified monitoring of fuel prices key to promoting transparency in retail fuel pricing in New Zealand.
