Price for fuel response support

MBIE publishes the previous week’s average board price for regular 91 petrol on Wednesday afternoons. This is the price government uses to inform the continuation of temporary fuel response support.

Fuel type Price type Week ending NZ$ per litre Number of consecutive weeks under $3 per litre
91 Regular Board 28 June 2026 $3.05 0

*Board price is based on the advertised price of fuel at service stations.

How MBIE calculates its board price

MBIE receives price data at the per-day, per-station and per-fuel level from the fuel pricing company Gaspy. We use these averages, along with Stats NZ’s estimates of regional population, to calculate a national average daily board price. This value is then averaged across the week (Monday through Sunday) to give a weekly average board price.

For more information on how MBIE calculated its prices, please see our methodology.

Weekly fuel price monitoring: Methodology and reference documents

The board price represents the advertised price of fuel

On average, consumers pay slightly less for fuel due to loyalty schemes and other discounting programmes. This is reflected in our adjusted retail price. We calculate our importer margin using this adjusted price.
