These 1-page regional summaries show the Regional Tourism Estimates (RTE) data for each regional tourism organisation (RTO).
We make the Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTEs) more accurate by updating them with spending data from Stats NZ's annual Tourism Satellite Account.
This section includes the Tourism Electronic Card Transactions (TECTs), Accommodation Data Programme (ADP), International Visitor Survey (IVS), Tourism Satellite Account (TSA), and data on international travel and cruise visitor spending in New Zealand.
The commentary below presents the national context for tourism in the year ending September 2019 (and for the September 2019 quarter where available). MBIE acknowledges that the outbreak of coronavirus creates some uncertainty looking ahead. This Quarterly Tourism Report provides a retrospective look at the performance of the sector, so the impacts of the outbreak are not included. Analysis of the impact of the outbreak will be included in future reports. Key findings are below:

Stats NZ publishes International Travel statistics which are used in the calculation of the International Visitor Survey (IVS).To meet IVS deadlines, Stats NZ supplied early provisional unpublished data, before data processing was complete, to MBIE for the December 2018 month. MBIE have now obtained the final data published by Stats NZ and have revised the IVS spend figures for the year ended December 2018 and the year ended March 2019.

The Business Events Delegate Survey collected expenditure and length of stay data from multi-day business event delegates through an online survey, from 2009 to 2019.
