Investment in quality infrastructure and tourism assets helps creates positive economic, social and environmental benefits for New Zealanders and our visitors.
This section brings together MBIE’s core tourism data sources to help users understand visitor behaviour, industry performance, and tourism’s wider economic impact. It includes regularly released datasets, surveys, and supporting materials.
The $50 million Regional Events Fund is designed to stimulate domestic tourism and travel between regions through holding events. This is intended to support the tourism and events sector, and replace some of the spending from international tourists due to the border closure as a result of COVID-19.
This section provides insights into the sector’s employment landscape, showing trends and demographic shifts. It highlights the sector’s contribution to New Zealand’s workforce, with employment gains driven by population growth and infrastructure projects. Despite strides in diversity, challenges persist, particularly in attracting and retaining skilled labour.
MBIE’s sustainability framework supports both the Government’s commitment to having a carbon-neutral public sector by 2025 and broader cultural, economic, environmental and social outcomes for the country.
In July 2021 Bragato Research Institute received $5 million (excl GST) for a Future Winegrowing Platform to support the transition to be a financially self-sustaining research institute over a 2 year period from July 2021 to June 2023.
The Modelled Territorial Authority Gross Domestic Product (MTAGDP) estimates have been developed from Stats NZ Regional GDP estimates. They provide information at the territorial authority area level so that we can better understand local economies and industries. Territorial authorities include both district councils and city councils. Some of these councils are unitary authorities, which also have the duties and powers of a regional council (Auckland Council, and Nelson City Council, for example).
