MBIE funding
The investment commenced on 1 June 2018. Between 1 June 2018 and 30 June 2022 a total of $25.5 million (excluding GST) was invested from the Strategic Science Investment Fund - Infrastructure.
New contracting arrangements from 1 July 2022 extended this investment for a further 5 years. $30 million (excluding GST) is being invested between 1 July 2022 and 30 June 2027.
About the investment
GeoNet provides fundamental support for effective management of geological hazard risks (tsunami, earthquakes, landslides, volcanoes) and emergencies in New Zealand, supporting emergency management across the ‘4Rs’:
- risk reduction
- readiness
- response
- recovery.
The GeoNet products and services support both monitoring and research.
National Geohazard Monitoring Centre
This investment mainly supports the operation of GeoNet’s National Geohazards Monitoring Centre (NGMC) with a smaller contribution towards the costs of development initiatives or core operations of GeoNet. The NGMC’s role is to monitor and respond to natural hazard events on a 24/7 basis, understand where the event has occurred, what the consequences of that event might be, and get that information to the people who need to make decisions and act quickly. A key stakeholder for this data and advice is the National Emergency Management Agency.
