Southland Murihiku Regional Workforce Plan | Te Kāhui Whakahaere i kā Pūkeka ā-Rohe o Murihiku - Te Rautaki Huka Mahi Ā Rohe

The 5 pou or pillars representing the 5 priority areas identified in the Regional Workforce Plan. The first priority pou is Rakatahi or youth. This is symbolised by a canoe and mooring post, showing how the plan is laying a strong foundation for Southland Murihiku rakatahi. The next pou is Food and Fibre and this is symbolised by a pōhā, a woven basket still used today by South Island Māori to preserve and transport food. The manufacturing and engineering pou shows a pātaka or storehouse held by two hands. This represents people working together for a common goal. The pātaka is decorated with a symbol combining a cog and a koru: industry and creativity. The Health Care and Social Assistance pou is in the form of a kea wing. For some tribes, kea were seen as kaitiaki or guardians. The Tourism and Hospitality pou shows a carved face, representing the tikaka or customs that cover our land and help to make Aotearoa New Zealand a hospitable place.
