Renewable generation surges as solar shines

Published: 11 June 2026

The latest Energy Quarterly data release from the Ministry of Business, Innovation & Employment (MBIE) shows renewables generated 94.5% of all electricity in the March 2026 quarter, up from 83.2% in the same quarter last year, says MBIE Domains Manager Amapola Generosa.

“A favourable mix of strong hydro inflows, increased wind output, and a 50% year-on-year increase in solar generation helped keep renewable electricity generation high this quarter,” says Generosa.

“This marks 2 quarters in a row where renewables have generated over 90% of New Zealand’s electricity, and the highest share for a March quarter since 1980.

“Record solar generation of 373 GWh reflects rapid growth in new capacity, including large-scale solar farms such as Pāmu Rā ki Whitianga and Te Herenga o Te Rā near Ōpōtiki, alongside strong summer solar conditions.

“Despite a 1.9% increase in net generation compared with the same quarter last year, fossil fuel generation fell sharply, with gas and coal generation down 67% and 66% respectively.

“Coal-fired electricity generation dropped significantly due to high renewable availability and planned outages at Huntly.

“Declining domestic gas production and ongoing global uncertainty continue to influence prices and supply across the wider energy system.

“Fuel imports remained stable despite disruption to global shipping routes following the early March closure of the Strait of Hormuz.

“Overall, the results reflect the strong impact of weather on New Zealand’s electricity system, with high rainfall and wind conditions driving increased renewable generation.”
