The Senior Content Designer is a writing specialist in the Digital Channels team.

The Senior Content Designer is responsible for writing clear, easy-to-understand and precise content for Immigration’s digital channels.

The Senior Content Designer will bring extensive experience and understanding in the following areas: web content strategy, content design, including writing in plain language, editing, User Experience (UX), and Information Architecture (IA).

Use their knowledge and expertise to work in partnership with the manager, team and stakeholders of Immigration New Zealand to deliver fit for purpose digital services, content and advice.

Personal specifications

  • A tertiary qualification or training in publishing, communications, journalism, writing or a related discipline.
  • Bring extensive knowledge of web content best practices, including writing plain English for web and digital channels, search engine optimisation, information architecture and accessibility.
  • Bring a proven track record of designing user-centred content, keeping the audience in mind, and understanding which channels to use effectively to reach our audience.
  • Ability to influence and negotiate with stakeholders to adopt content solutions at a senior level.
  • Extensive knowledge of Google Analytics and its use as evidence to develop content that meets the needs of users and influences their behaviour.
  • Ability to self-manage and organise your work, including the ability to pivot at short notice and change priorities.
  • Ability to demonstrate innovation, experimentation, problem solving and agile ways of working, to develop and inject a digital focus into engagement strategies and plans.
  • Extensive knowledge of web trends, standards and best practice for content design.
  • Advanced knowledge of html, web design and content management systems.
  • Ability to simplify complex language and ideas.
  • An advanced knowledge of language and grammar.
  • Bring a curious mind and have the ability to challenge the status quo when required.

Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables

Responsibilities of this position are expected to change over time as the Ministry responds to changing needs.  The incumbent will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves. This includes performing any other reasonable duties as required.

Manages the content requirements on the INZ website and digital channels

The Senior Content Designer will be required to:

  • Support the Manager, Digital Channels and the Senior Content Strategist to develop INZ’s digital strategy setting the future direction of information delivery across INZ’s channels.
  • Use evidence to identify, manage and write content for web and digital channels, using the right tone and voice, using clear, precise plain English, tailored to user needs.
  • Design and write content for Immigration digital channels to meet our user needs. Ensuring it aligns with the content strategy, style guide, and meets NZ Government web standards for accessibility and usability.
  • Work with and maintain style guides.
  • Engage with our internal stakeholders to manage day-to-day content requests. Including: creating and defining requirements, writing, reviewing and editing content. Ensuring that content meets the needs of our users, stakeholders and reflects the content strategy objectives.
  • Lead activities related to digital communications, collaborating with the Information Products and Marketing teams to develop and implement channel strategies and plans (eg social media, e-newsletters, pro-comms).
  • Provide advice, leadership and training in digital best practices to others in Immigration e.g. governance, standards, usability, accessibility, design and technical.
  • Build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders including government agencies and delivery partners at any level.
  • Actively identify opportunities to improve our products and services so they better meet the needs of our customers and deliver greater productivity and compliance.
  • Willingly shares knowledge, expertise within the team and with others in the organisation.
  • Work collaboratively across I&E, SEE and MBIE to support staff and projects involved in providing or preparing content for INZ.
  • Champion good online writing principles and practice among website stakeholders and SMEs and build the content capability for the future.
  • Regularly review content performance and identify content issues. Developing solutions that are user-centric, practical and cost-effective.
  • Deal comfortably with significant uncertainty and changing environments.
  • Demonstrate flexibility, adaptability and strategic agility as the needs and priorities of our customers, influencers and our business change.

  • Lead online content development and management, and support engagement with stakeholders on website content matters.
  • Actively promote online content approaches in relation to the work programme that benefit our audiences and contribute to the Striking the Balance strategic objectives.
  • Champion Immigrations visual identity and brand guidelines into product and service design.
  • Assist with the development, implementation and re-evaluation of our digital strategy, Information Architecture, workflow processes and procedures. Setting the future direction of information delivery across INZ’s channels.
