Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Senior Engagement and Communications Advisor is responsible for delivering CERT NZ’s communications campaigns and providing strategic communications advice.

The position is responsible for delivering communications campaigns to support and promote positive cyber security behaviours.

The Senior Advisor also works with marketing and research agencies to carry out market research projects, develop engagement strategies, oversee campaign development and production, and report on results.

The role also assists the broader team with media engagement, social media strategies, website content and publications.

Personal specifications

Skills and Experience:

  • Strong writing, editing and oral communications skills, including writing fit-for-purpose content targeted at specific audiences in appropriate channels.
  • Experience in delivering communications and engagement campaigns, including managing third party agencies such as marketing, advertising and research companies.
  • An understanding of marketing fundamentals and how to put together successful marketing strategies to achieve change.
  • The ability to take a strategic, proactive approach to communications and associated stakeholder engagement, and to create strategies that fit with overall organisational and government objectives.
  • A sound understanding of cyber security or IT is advantageous.
  • A relevant tertiary qualification or extensive and comparable relevant experience.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

CERT NZ provides incident response services from 7am to 7pm Monday to Friday with 24/7 response to serious cyber incidents. CERT NZ staff may be called upon out of hours in an emergency.

The Senior Engagement and Communications Advisor is required to deliver results in the following areas:

Critical Success Factors

  • Develop and implement campaigns to reach key audiences to support and promote cyber security awareness and behaviours.
  • Manage the processes, people and agencies involved in campaign delivery, to deliver outcomes and milestones on time.
  • Identify and manage risks, and keeping managers informed as appropriate.
  • Keep internal and external stakeholders informed and involved as required.
  • Complete legal, reporting and administrative requirements associated with projects.

Strategic focus

  • Translate government and organisational over-arching strategic priorities into relevant communications, channel, marketing and content initiatives, helping to advance CERT NZ interests.
  • Identify opportunities for CERT NZ to challenge conventional practices, or to play a leadership role within the national cyber security landscape.
  • Undertake projects to enhance the overall CERT NZ strategic plan.

Relationship management

  • Proactively establish and maintain effective working relationships with key stakeholders including other functional leaders. Actively build and manage a network of key stakeholders to inform the role’s work.
  • Develop effective working relationships with other MBIE managers and staff in order to transfer knowledge and learning to the team and wider organisation.
  • Represent the CERT NZ’s and whole-of-Ministry views and protect their reputation in any external interactions.

Channel Management

  • Contribute to strategies for CERT NZ’s owned channels and communications products, to maximise reach and impact. This includes e-news communications, web content, social media, media, and key products such as CERT NZ’s Quarterly Reports.
  • Develop an understanding of, and have empathy for, CERT NZ’s customers’ point of view and user experience with CERT NZ, contributing to continuous improvement.
  • Ensure that communications are fit-for-purpose for the target audience by using the most appropriate communication tools and methods.

Marketing and Communications management

  • Lead the development and delivery of CERT NZ’s marketing and communications strategy contributing to CERT NZ’s overarching goals.
  • Identify ways for CERT NZ activities to leverage other MBIE teams, government agencies and professional bodies such as Business.govt.nz, consumerprotection.govt.nz, Netsafe, Institute of Directors, and other organisations and agencies.
  • Build partnerships with other organisations to deliver effective CERT NZ awareness programmes.

Wellbeing, health & safety

  • Displays commitment through actively supporting all safety and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Ensures own and others safety at all times.
  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.

The Senior Engagement and Communications Advisor position reports into the Manager, Engagement, Communication and Partnerships within the Strategy and Enablement branch. The branch sits within the Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery group.
