Kānoa – Regional Development Unit (Kānoa – RDU) is the focal point within Government for regional economic development (RED).
The Investment Analyst works across Kānoa – Regional Economic Development & Investment Unit (RDU), with other teams within MBIE and with agencies across the public sector. They provide analysis and advice on major capital investments for the Crown, assess proposals and develop advice for the various funds managed by Kānoa –RDU.
The Investment Analyst will be required to assist with drafting briefings and reports to Ministers, Crown Regional Holdings Ltd, and Kānoa-REDIU Senior Management.
They may also be required to produce reports, or coordinate the production of reports on specific topics or areas of commercial/industrial activity.

Personal specifications
- Knowledge and experience in investment management and the ability to answer enquiries, triage and make investment assessments with the ability to research, analyse and evaluate.
- Strong numerical ability and quantitative skills.
- Self-confidence, drive and tenacity with proven ability to work under pressure, establish priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environment.
- Excellent communication skills both verbal and written.
- Demonstrated experience in developing and maintaining key networks and constructive stakeholder relationships both internal and external to the organisation.
- The ability to work with all levels of the organisation and relate to and gain the confidence of a diverse range of stakeholders
- Initiative, flexibility, and innovation.
- Tertiary qualification preferably in finance, accounting, economics, law or related discipline.

Responsibilities of this position are expected to change over time as the Ministry responds to changing needs. The incumbent will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves.
Investment Management Activities and Tasks
- Undertake assessments and client management responsibilities for funds administered by Kānoa – RDU. This will include:
- conducting due diligence on companies and organisations by researching, reading financial statements and market data
- analysing financial information relating to specific companies, e.g. company results, profit and loss, balance sheet and cash flow statements to determine how an organisation is positioned to deliver for investors
- assisting Senior Investment Analysts/Commercial Leads/Investment Directors with more complex deals from assessment through to contracting and management thereof
- understanding how investments fit within a regional and national context
- Keep up to date with market developments, and areas that can affect the markets, e.g. movements in the economy, financial news using specialist media sources
- Undertake financial modelling and projection where required
- Draft and write research reports as required
- Make recommendations to Investment Directors, this might include summaries of research and/or investment ideas, with the ability to position ideas and articulate the risk or payoff for each recommendation
Relationship Management
- Build and maintain regional governance and stakeholder group relationships
- Build and maintain effective relationships and partnerships with internal and other stakeholders, as necessary
- Represent whole-of-Ministry views and protect its reputation in any external interactions
- Develop and maintain effective working relationships with investment partners, including banks, fund managers, regional partners/ stakeholders and other government investment funds
Wellbeing, health & safety

- Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
