Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Business Advisor is responsible for supporting the branch by delivering a range of business advisory services to support the strategic direction and operations of the branch, ensuring quality and consistency of advice and practices.

The Business Advisor will bring and further develop their business understanding, risk management experience and perspective to work across Immigration New Zealand (INZ) and MBIE to grow relationships and inform strategic and operational projects. The role is also responsible for delivering a range of business advisory services representing and supporting the branch.

Personal specifications

  • Understanding of the processes that underpin the operations of the public sector environment, Cabinet and parliamentary processes, and machinery of government.
  • Proven experience in delivering outstanding quality service to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ability to quickly assimilate new information and understand unfamiliar issues.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to consistently meet deadlines.
  • Exposed to applying legislation to an operational context (e.g., the Immigration Act 2009, Official Information Act and Privacy Act).
  • Strong analytical skills and attention to detail, including an ability to quickly identify risks and issues and possible pathways forward.
  • Good communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Political awareness and sensitivity to anticipate areas of potential risk and inform decision-making.
  • Proven ability to develop trust and credibility with managers and staff.
  • High integrity and ability in handling sensitive and confidential information.
  • Relevant qualification or equivalent experience.
  • The ability to gain and maintain a national security clearance as required.
  • Must have the legal right to work in New Zealand.

Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables

Provides advice and support

  • Deliver and contribute to the day-to-day work of the branch including planning, performance and reporting, risk management, business continuity planning, continuous improvement, and assurance processes.
  • Provide quality and timely advice to all relevant stakeholders, including to the branch leadership team, Immigration Leadership Team, Minister and Associate Minister of Immigration.
  • Deliver and provide quality advice and support to teams within the branch to contribute to the continuous improvement of services, systems, and processes.
  • Maintain a well-developed awareness of branch issues, and provide, wherever appropriate, a branch perspective through support and advice, for inclusion into Immigration and MBIE projects, policies, and procedures.
  • Identify ways of thinking about risks and issues including options to resolve these.
  • Monitor sensitive cases to ensure good outcomes for the branch and INZ, providing support where required. Escalates issues and risks appropriately.
  • Delivery of services, products and programmes that actively support and contribute to the achievement of MBIE’s outcomes and that deliver to the needs of internal and external stakeholders.
  • Maintain awareness of the work of other INZ branches to be able to deliver a system wide approach to immigration issues.

Deliver reporting

  • Working closely with the INZ Business Management Team to provide quality input to ministerial servicing, including Select Committee Questions, Parliamentary Questions and Official Information Act requests.
  • Manage the preparation of regular reports and special reporting assignments effectively.

  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation
