As a Risk and Assurance Advisor you will have the opportunity to grow your risk and assurance skills and play a crucial role in enabling MBIE to deliver its outcomes and effectively manage critical ICT service delivery.

The role sits within the Planning Risk and Assurance Branch of the Digital Data and Insights (DDI) Group in MBIE. The DDI group is large and complex being responsible for all MBIEs ICT, project and programme management and data analytics and insights functions. We operate as a small team in a fast-paced environment where you will have the opportunity to challenge yourself and really add value.

Reporting to the Manager Group Risk and Assurance, the role acts as a trusted advisor providing expert advice and support to improve how risks are managed and the quality and effectiveness of assurance activities.

Personal specifications

  • Experience supporting a risk, assurance or compliance function in a large and complex environment is desirable.
  • Proven ability to develop trust, credibility and influence with senior managers and staff and build strong working relationships.
  • Pragmatic and empathetic approach to applying different frameworks, systems, and processes to different types of organisations/teams.
  • Experience working with internal controls and continuous business process improvement is desirable, including the ability to scope and execute reviews.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to quickly assimilate new information or areas of work.
  • Well organised with the ability to multitask and manage time effectively.
  • Takes initiative and manages own work programme.
  • Takes personal ownership of growth and development.

Qualifications

  • A relevant tertiary qualification or equivalent experience.

Other

  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Must consent to, and satisfactorily complete, a credit check.

  • The responsibilities of this position are expected to change over time as DDI responds to changing needs. The incumbent will need the flexibility to adapt and develop as the environment evolves.

Delivers quality results which contribute to the Ministry’s outcomes

  • Provides expert advice on risk identification, management, and analysis.
  • Provides expert advice on compliance and internal control related matters to senior managers and staff that is timely and pragmatic.
  • Works with internal policy owners to define compliance obligations that will form the basis of those policies.
  • Contributes to the development and maintenance of DDI’s obligations register ensuring this is kept up to date for any changes to legislation, model standards, internal policy obligations, risk review recommendation etc.
  • Works closely with DDI’s 1st line Risk and Assurance teams and 2nd line Functional Risk Leads to ensure there is appropriate compliance monitoring in place to assess the state of compliance across the Ministry.
  • Supports and implements the work programme to lift risk, assurance and compliance capability and culture across DDI, including taking the lead on specific initiatives and engagement with key stakeholder groups.
  • Supports and implements reporting frameworks for branch and group risk and assurance systems.
  • Conducts root-cause identification of significant risks and issues or areas where non-compliance is identified.
  • Works with internal stakeholders to ensure commitments made to address audit findings are delivered.
  • Continuously improves DDI risk and assurance frameworks, policies, systems and processes and their application across the Ministry.
  • Leads by example by displaying and encouraging behaviours essential to the delivery of a strong risk and assurance culture in DDI.
