Tēnei tūranga – About the role
The Senior Business Advisor plays a critical role to help shape Strategy and Assurance’s business planning and performance framework.
This role will also actively manage the development of Strategy and Assurance accountability products (such as the Annual Review, and give input into the Annual report, etc.) and maintain connections across MBIE and Strategy and Assurance to help design and improve an effective accountability system that supports leaders. This role is also responsible for the provision of planning and reporting material to support Strategy and Assurance Leadership team decision making, risk mitigation and assurance.
This role requires flexibility to re-focus effort, if necessary, to respond to our rapidly evolving environment.

- Strong conceptual thinker and problem solver, and demonstrating innovation and excellent judgement.
- Clear, concise communicator with particular strengths in writing; official correspondence, briefing notes for senior leadership and the Minister.
- Able to cut a clear path through complexity and work through ambiguous problems to find satisfactory outcomes.
- Self-motivated and results-driven, including the ability to do what is difficult or unpopular when required, to work effectively under pressure and focus on key issues.
- Excellent interpersonal skills with an ability to liaise and collaborate effectively at all levels of the organisation and an ability to build and maintain strategic relationships.
- Maturity, political nous, sound judgement, flexibility, and a sense of teamwork in a demanding and unpredictable work environment, which can involve urgent problem resolution.
- Attention to detail and a commitment to accuracy and excellence.
- High energy drive and motivation.
- Knowledge and experience of Te Ao Māori and Te Ao Māori practices; tikanga, Te Reo and a comprehensive understanding of the Treaty, Te Tiriti and the Treaty Principles.
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant field or equivalent experience.

- Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

Critical areas of success
- Works with others across Strategy and Assurance and MBIE to ensure successful and on time delivery of the public sector accountability framework. This includes Annual Estimates of Appropriations, the Annual Review, and the Annual Report.
- Identifies opportunities as to how Strategy and Assurance’s accountability framework will look in the future, how we work together with other groups across MBIE, and how all the processes fit together.
- Committed and skilled relationship manager, using their influencing and collaboration skills and experience to build and maintain important relationships, to identify best practice processes.
- Provides strategic advice on Strategy and Assurance and MBIE-wide issues and positioning the group with key external stakeholders.
Business Planning and Performance Management
- Supports Strategy and Assurance group business planning initiatives and performance reporting.
- Able to identify trends from multiple data sources covering quantitative and qualitative data sets and relate these to the Strategy and Assurance business planning and performance framework.
- Continuously and independently monitors the environment, anticipates priorities, and issues, and proactively liaises with colleagues to act.
- High quality accurate work is delivered within agreed timelines.
Relationship management
- Recognised internally and externally as an innovative and cutting edge thought leader, contributing their knowledge and expertise to achieve the Ministry’s outcomes.
- Builds and maintains relationships with key stakeholders that ensure MBIE’s views are influential in their decision-making.
- Develops and maintains effective and productive working relationships with other relevant MBIE business groups.
- Provides strategic advice on Strategy and Assurance and MBIE-wide issues and positioning the group with key stakeholders.
Wellbeing, health and safety
- Displays commitment through actively supporting all safety and wellbeing initiatives.
- Ensures own and others' safety at all times.
- Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
- Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
