Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Procurement Graduate is a team member position with a growth and development focus. This position is designed to provide learning opportunities to build understanding of procurement concepts, strategies, and best practice principles and how to apply them to deliver results.

The Procurement Graduate assists with conducting market research, analysing procurement and contract management issues, developing plans, and preparing advice for procurement projects.

As part of the Procurement Graduate role you will undertake four, six-month placements to a range of government agencies.

Procurement activities and tasks

Contributes to tasks and projects as directed, maintains effective working relationships

  • Work with stakeholders to identify needs.
  • Undertake market and spend analysis and use data to forecast future demand.
  • Use data to understand trends and support the development of recommendations.
  • Develop market engagement strategies and work with peers to undertake early market engagement.
  • Assist with running tenders.
  • Build strong working relationships with suppliers/providers as part of supplier relationship management.
  • Write compelling and well thought through business cases, commercial opportunities, and contract management plans.

Work management

Plans and manages work, develops, and maintains relationships with colleagues and stakeholders.

  • Works with close guidance and supervision when needed but also works autonomously on small projects.
  • Assists project leaders with project planning and project management by contributing deliverables on time and keeping abreast of project milestones and interdependencies.
  • Manages own workload with assistance from Manager or more senior Procurement Advisor- Analyst.

Wellbeing, health and safety

  • Displays commitment through actively supporting all safety and wellbeing initiatives.
  • Ensures own and others safety at all times.
  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.

NZGP is a branch within The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE). We have a vision for New Zealand’s government procurement to be fair, transparent, inclusive, and efficient. It will deliver more value and respond to changing government priorities.

At all times during the Programme, you will be employed by MBIE and will report to the Procurement Graduate Programme Lead, New Zealand Government Procurement at MBIE. Your MBIE Manager is responsible for overseeing and supporting your development throughout the programme. As you will be seconded to a Host Agency, you will report to your Host Agency Manager on day-to-day matters. Details of your Host Agency Manager will be provided ahead of each secondment. Although you will have regular contact with your MBIE Manager, your primary responsibility will be to your assigned Host Agency Manager.
