Business Registries (NZ Companies Office) is a sub-branch of the Market Integrity Branch of Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group, MBIE.  Our vision is to deliver world leading regulation to protect fairness and integrity of markets in New Zealand, in line with the Ministry’s purpose of ‘Grow New Zealand for All’ and towards Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery’s unique contribution to the goal ‘Fair Markets That Thrive’.

Business Registries is the authoritative source of information about a variety of entities, securities over personal property, and financial products.  We are the guardians of New Zealand’s core business information through the Companies and NZBN register and play a crucial role in building trust and confidence in our economy, helping to make New Zealand a place where doing business is easy, transparent and fair.

The Reporting Analyst supports Business Registries (Companies Office), other internal stakeholders, and external clients.

The Reporting Analyst assists with the design, implementation, maintenance, and administration of the Business Registries business intelligence environment.  The environment includes reporting, analysis, and delivery of information, particularly across the Companies Office and the New Zealand Business Number programme.

Information provided from the reporting team supports both internal and external clients.  At times, self-help tools may need to be designed for stakeholders and clients to enable them to retrieve and analyst registry data themselves.  The ability to think innovatively to find solutions and to trouble-shoot issues with complicated technical platforms is important.  A thorough technical knowledge of MBIE’s specialist reporting tools, programmes and registry databases is required.

The Reporting Analyst may work on both business-as-usual work and in projects.  In the project context, the ability to understand and apply Business Requirements documents is required.

Personal specifications

  • A proven track record of experience and achievement in an analytical role, utilising complex information
  • Wide ranging knowledge of systems and tools for reporting SQL, R, Python
  • Good understanding of the principles of database architecture
  • Proven ability to write complex database query scripts
  • Proven ability to use reporting infrastructures tools such as those included in the SAP Business Objects suite
  • Proven ability to create interactive reports using a range of business intelligence tools as appropriate
  • Ability to analyse data requirements and design solutions using appropriate business intelligence tools
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation
  • Highly organised with good time and task management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and demands from a range of stakeholders
  • Strong commitment to providing outstanding client service and public value for money
  • Working knowledge of public sector processes
  • Actively identifies potential to broaden or deepen existing expertise
  • Tertiary qualification, preferably in information management, systems development, statistics, computer science or other relevant discipline – and/or extensive and comparable relevant experience

Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables

  • Extracts data from various register databases through the use of specialist technical reporting tools
  • Identifies data or information requirements, assess existing registry data sources, and develops new reports where necessary
  • Creates Ad-hoc data reports for one-off requirements
  • Creates and maintains automated reports to provide for ongoing data requirements
  • Creates and maintains self-service reports for frequently requested data
  • Assists with administration, maintenance and enhancement of the reporting infrastructure to enable high value, relevant, informative reporting in a timely manner
  • Produces regular and ad hoc reporting, escalating more complex matters to Senior Reporting Analyst or Team Leader where required
  • Works with relevant subject matter experts to ensure business context is appropriately considered and incorporated in reporting where required
  • Understands the different drivers of each business unit and these mean for reporting, and analysis of requirements
  • Transfers knowledge and learning to the team and wider organisation
  • Works collaboratively to provide services that are sought after and recognised for being of high quality
  • Relationships are established, maintained and enhanced with relevant clients and stakeholders
  • Timeliness of delivery is effectively managed to meet business and stakeholder needs
