Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Advisor, International Standards Development role is a specialist position within the Standards New Zealand team. The main responsibilities within this role include the project management and coordination of a range of New Zealand and joint Australia/New Zealand standards development committees. The role is also responsible for the administration of the New Zealand membership of the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC).

Personal specifications

  • Experience in project management and coordination of projects involving multiple stakeholders.
  • Proven ability to use communication and information technology systems and methods, including MS Word, MS Project, MS Excel, internet facilities and email (expert level as research and use of the internet for committees), internal and external databases, MS Power Point.
  • Demonstrated ability to quickly assimilate new areas of work.
  • Open to possibility of travelling to Australia to facilitate in person committee meetings if required (Maximum 2 times per year and for no more than 3 days per trip).
  • Proven ability to quickly develop trust and credibility, and to establish and build positive and effective working relationships, within the organisation and with New Zealand and international external stakeholders and committee members.
  • Proven ability to assist internal and external stakeholders to resolve any identified issues in a timely and professional manner.
  • Strong communications skills, both written and verbal are essential.
  • Excellent prioritising and multitasking skills to meet agreed timeframes.

Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables

Management of Joint Australian/New Zealand Secretariats as specified in the annual program of work including:

  • Prepare for and attend Joint AS/NZS committee meetings.
  • Undertake travel to Australia if and when needed to hold Joint Australia/New Zealand committee meetings in person.
  • Develop meeting agenda in consultation with the committee Chair and upload items for discussion to the online collaboration platform (Komiti).
  • Prepare accurate meeting minutes for review by the committee Chair prior to circulation to the committee.
  • Prepare and present Project Briefs covering the agreed work programme to the Standards Approval Board.
  • Prepare Standards Australia Project Proposal for approval of the agreed work programme or single joint AS/NZS standard.
  • Prepare public comment drafts for circulation to stakeholders in New Zealand and Australia.
  • Summarise public comment for review by the committee.
  • Manage Committee postal ballots for review by the committee.
  • Prepare publication drafts in conjunction with the Chair to reflect committee decisions.
  • Prepare and present memos for approval to publish to the Standards Approval Board.
  • Prepare Publication Approval Forms to enable Standards Australia to approve publication.
  • Ensure publication in New Zealand and Australia occurs on the agreed dates.
  • Provide access to Komiti for New Zealand and Australian committee members.
  • Liaise with the relevant Standards Australia Project Managers and other stakeholders as required.

Administration of the New Zealand membership of ISO and IEC to assist with fulfilment of the New Zealand member body obligations including:

  • Keeping the Senior Adviser International Relationships informed of any issues which may impact on our memberships of ISO and IEC.
  • Review of ISO and IEC emails daily and filing in relevant MAKO folder by committee.
  • Ensuring obligatory ballots where New Zealand are Participating members of ISO and IEC committees are completed by due date.
  • Ensuring any inquiries received are dealt with quickly and accurately.
  • Maintain currency of ISO Global Directory and IEC Expert Management System, including adding and removing New Zealand experts as appropriate.
  • Register New Zealand experts to the ISO Meeting platform.
  • Maintain spreadsheet of current ISO committees, including New Zealand membership details.
  • Maintain spreadsheet of New Zealand ballots in response to ISO Draft International Standards (DIS) and Final Draft International Standards (FDIS) for reporting purposes.
  • Management and coordination of New Zealand Standard development projects as required.

  • Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
  • Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.
  • Is involved in health and safety through participation and consultation.
