Tēnei tūranga – About the role
The Advisor Privacy is a team member position in MBIE, reporting to the Team Leader Privacy in the Legal, Ethics and Privacy Branch (LEAP).
The Advisor Privacy will bring their business understanding and perspective to work in partnership with their manager and other staff. The role is responsible for contributing to development and implementation of new processes and tools to ensure the successful delivery of the MBIE Privacy function and creating a culture within MBIE where personal information is respected and protected.
The Advisor Privacy will provide guidance and advice to other Privacy Team members, and support to the Privacy function and the Ministry generally, to deliver an up lift in privacy management capability at MBIE. The Advisor Privacy also manages BAU event reporting and supports the delivery of Privacy Impact Assessments by the Business Groups.
The Privacy Team is a small central team that works MBIE-wide to embed privacy at MBIE, consistent with the organisation’s obligations under the Privacy Act 2020 and the Government Chief Privacy Officers expectations. This will improve MBIE’s privacy awareness and capability and move MBIE towards a whole of organisation approach to privacy.

Personal specifications
- Strong analytical skills
- An ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with a wide range of people at all levels, both internal and external to MBIE
- Experience in reviewing and implementing processes to enhance business improvement and service delivery
- Good relationship management skills
- A knowledge and understanding of Privacy legislation and policy processes
- Strong organisational skills, with the ability to prioritise and work to deadlines
- Work proactively, with little direct management
- Demonstrated high levels of integrity and flexibility
- Negotiating and influencing positive outcomes
- Strong and persuasive communications including written and oral presentation skills
- Developing implementation plans for new policies, process and systems
- Ability to assimilate and translate new information or changes that are legislative and/or ICT in nature
- Working knowledge of public sector processes is desirable
- High degree of initiative and drive
- Microsoft office skills.
Qualifications
- Tertiary qualification in a relevant discipline or equivalent operational experience.
Other
- Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

Critical Areas of Success
The Advisor Privacy will be required to deliver results in the following areas:
- Support the Principal Advisor, Privacy to monitor and report on the use of Privacy practices across MBIE
- Support the enhancement of MBIE privacy practices by defining, reviewing and updating privacy policies, procedures and tools
- Manage the BAU event reporting and supports the delivery of Privacy Impact Assessments by the Business Groups
- Communicate effectively and exercises sound judgement
- Promoting a strong privacy culture within MBIE
Relationship Management
- Manage constructive working relationships with work colleagues and external stakeholders to enhance understanding and cooperation needed to achieve desired results
- Participates as an active team member and contributes knowledge and expertise needed to achieve MBIE’s outcomes and Strategic Intentions
- Develops effective working relationships with other MBIE managers and staff in order to transfer knowledge and learning from the team to the wider organisation to ensure MBIE meets its corporate responsibility to respect privacy
- Builds and maintains effective relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, as necessary, in order to identify and share best practice information and to promote the Ministry, its products and services
- Represents whole-of-Ministry views and protects its reputation in any external interactions.
