The Data Analyst is a team member position in MBIE. The Data Analyst will bring their business understanding and perspective to work in partnership with their manager and other staff. The Data Analyst contributes to the operations of the Business Analytics and Targeting team.

The Data Analyst supports R&V and other business units with data and reporting to inform decision making across the Immigration system, Parliamentary Questions (PQs), Official Information Act requests (OIAs), media query responses, process changes and implementing improvement initiatives.

The role is responsible for providing business analytics services, including monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on outcomes, issues, trends and challenges. The Data Analyst is responsible for providing statistical analysis, data analysis, regular and ad hoc reporting, quality assurance and advisory services to support R&V and wider INZ.

Personal specifications

  • Proven knowledge and experience in analysing business information needs and the ability to translate these into business information requirements.
  • Knowledge of relational databases and business information tools/software.
  • Experience of working with large data sets in a data warehouse environment.
  • Skills in database and analytical tools primarily SQL and including SAS EG, SAS Visual Analytics, MS Excel, Power BI and R.
  • Ability to work with numbers and utilising these to underpin decisions with quantitative data.
  • Excellent communications, self-management, and interpersonal skills.
  • Proven ability to clearly present analysis and ideas in person and on paper.
  • Ability to translate complex and technical information into information easily understood by non-technical staff.
  • Comfortable dealing with ambiguity and changing requirements.
  • Ability to quickly establish and build strong working relationships.
  • Tertiary qualification, preferably in Statistics, Operations Research, computer science or some other relevant discipline and/or comparable relevant experience.
  • The ability to gain and maintain a national security clearance as required.
  • The ability to gain and maintain MBIE privileged access as required.
  • Must be a NZ citizen or hold a Permanent resident visa.

Key deliverables

The Data Analyst will be required to deliver results in the following areas:

  • Providing analysis, information, content, quality assurance and data management services to R&V.
  • Undertakes data mining activity and complex statistical and pattern analysis.
  • Undertake reporting to monitor the triage system on a regular and ad-hoc basis.
  • Identifies additional analytical techniques and tools to enhance the identification and generation of insights.
  • Demonstrates a structured and pragmatic approach to analysis, including working with stakeholders to interpret and validate the results.
  • Identifies, prepares, and oversees the implementation of data mining algorithms.
  • Providing knowledge management and business analysis services, monitoring, evaluating, and reporting on outcomes trends, issues and challenges.
  • Ensuring information collected is analysed and disseminated in an effective and timely manner and is used in the plans and work programmes to assist R&V/INZ and wider MBIE to ensure the integrity of Risk and Value Management.
  • Design and deliver information products that satisfy user requirements, including Ad hoc queries and reports, Regular reports, Data analyses.
  • Build relationships with key staff to ensure they are equipped with the knowledge to conduct and contribute to the Triage and Verification framework.
