Tēnei tūranga – About the role
The Practice Leader, Immigration Compliance and Investigation is a technical expert responsible for providing either the National Manager Compliance or the National Manager Investigations with high quality specialist and technical advice to support the unit’s strategic direction and operational running of the unit. This role ensures the quality and consistency of advice coming to the General Manager and branch leadership by providing support and advice to either the Immigration Compliance or Immigration Investigations team.
The Practice Leader is also responsible for working collaboratively across Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery and the wider Immigration System.

Personal specifications
- Demonstrated experience working with leadership teams and providing specialist and technical advice.
- Demonstrated understanding of developing and managing organisation-wide systems and processes.
- Ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- In-depth knowledge of processes at the centre of government as well as wider governmental processes and protocols.
- An ability to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing with a wide range of people at all levels, both internal and external to MBIE.
- Sound ability to deliver successful outcomes in a demanding environment.
- Sound ability to influence, lead and facilitate others to achieve outcomes.
- Demonstrated ability to think strategically and translate ideas and concepts into concrete actions, identify and assess risk considering long-term potential outcomes and anticipate consequences and trends.
- Sound ability to make quality decisions by using sound, well-rounded, informed, and inclusive approaches.
- Must be a New Zealand Citizen or Permanent Resident.
- Ability to gain and maintain a national security clearance if required.

Specialist and technical advice
- Provides the General Manager and National Managers with high quality specialist and technical advice to strengthen the overall capability of the branch and ensure the quality and consistency of service provision and practices support the unit’s strategic direction and operational running of the unit.
- Responsible for ensuring quality systems and processes are in place to support quality engagement across the unit, including supporting consistent approaches and tracking risks.
- Promotes and drives consistent, quality work processes and practices across the unit to inform quality decision-making and engagement that puts the customer at the centre.
- Compiles, analyses and advises on planning and monitoring related to operations and performance of the unit.
- Identifies business changes and risks, escalates as required and assists General Manager and National Managers in devising strategies to effectively mitigate risk or accommodate change.
- Contributes to development of processes and frameworks that support generation and use of customer insights within the unit
- Supports a cross-system perspective and provides strategic advice on TWSD and MBIE-wide issues with consideration to the needs and interests of key external stakeholders.
- Represents Immigration Compliance and Investigations within TWSD and across MBIE, championing the customer centricity and leading engagement with key internal and external stakeholders as required.
- Provides guidance on best practice and risk management, in line with MBIE policies and INZ strategic objectives.
- Provides advice on prioritisation and supports flexibility within the unit, based on understanding of stakeholder needs and ability to analyse risk
- Contributes as a member of the Immigration Compliance or Investigations leadership team, contributing knowledge and expertise to achieve unit, branch and TWSD objectives and outcomes, particularly around customer centricity.
- Lead specific projects as required.
Relationship management
- Fosters relationships with TWSD and INZ leadership, Risk and Border, peers, colleagues, and MBIE collaboration partners to enhance understanding and co-operation to achieve desired results, including working with the team regarding policy releases, key messages and engagement planning.
- Participates as an active team member and contributes knowledge and expertise needed to achieve desired outcomes.
- Develops effective working relationships with other managers and staff in order to transfer knowledge and learning to the wider organisation.

- Displays commitment through actively supporting all safety and wellbeing initiatives.
- Ensures own and others safety at all times.
- Complies with relevant safety and wellbeing policies, procedures, safe systems of work and event reporting.
- Reports all incidents/accidents, including near misses in a timely fashion.

The Practice Leader position reports into either the National Manager Compliance or National Manager Investigations within the Immigration Compliance and Investigations branch. This branch sits within the Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery group.
