Tēnei tūranga – About the role

The Senior Strategic Governance Advisor provides governance advice and secretariat support to Mana Whakaruruhau, MBIE’s enterprise governance system. The Senior Strategic Governance Advisor is a trusted advisor to the Chairs of the Committees. They undertake an important and largely autonomous advisory role, working with Chairs and the Senior Leadership Team (SLT) to support their effective stewardship of MBIE.

The Senior Strategic Governance Advisor works across the governance system to enable effective, joined up governance committees through clarity of purpose, timely papers, great communication and interventions when they are required and the governance system needs improving. This position oversees and contributes to the assessment of material and follow up on decisions for SLT and the Committees as required. This role will be a trusted advisor to the Chairs of the Committees which they work with.

Personal specifications

  • Sound understanding of governance concepts and practices.
  • Sound understanding of government processes and public sector management practices.
  • Excellent communications (verbal and written) skills.
  • Ability to influence and gain acceptance of others.
  • Ability to think and act strategically on order to work successful across the System of Governance not just in Committees.
  • Organisational political savvy with the ability to work with ease in the internal political environment.
  • Demonstrated ability in organising workflow and determining priorities.
  • Ability to work under pressure.
  • Ability to analyse information and display sound judgement.
  • High level of computer literacy.
  • Demonstrated understanding of information management, including the facilitation, quality assurance and distribution of documents.
  • Capable of influencing and persuading others to accept a view or action that promotes organisational success.
  • Experience taking minutes.
  • Tertiary qualification in a relevant field and/or comparable relevant experience.
  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.
  • Must consent to and satisfactorily complete a credit check.

Takohanga tuhinga o mua – Key accountabilities and deliverables

Governance expertise

  • Develop, plan and manage the forward agenda planning, agendas, schedule of actions and information requests, minutes of meetings, and all information management processes for the Ministry’s governance meetings/ committees.
  • Assess material going to SLT or other MBIE governance committees and provide feedback to authors/sponsors as necessary to ensure fit for purpose advice is presented.
  • Support the ongoing development and refinement of policies and systems to provide clarity on the MBIE Governance system, the actions and the responses, providing transparency of decision-making.
  • Show a commitment to understanding and applying Te ao Māori to the MBIE Governance system and governance practices and our everyday interactions with each other.
  • Provide input to regular reviews of the governance system and identify any areas for improvement.
  • Finalise, distribute and follow up on SLT or other MBIE governance committees’ minutes and action items as required.
  • Support the team as a centre of expertise for lifting the overall governance system of MBIE.
  • Support the development of innovative, practical, effective and durable governance support options that will help to achieve the desired outcomes.
  • Support a customer focused culture across Ngā Pou o te Taumaru group.

The Senior Strategic Governance Advisor reports to the Head of Governance and supports and at times leads the phases of MBIE’s governance system. They work with the governance team and SLT to ensure the governance system is continuously improving to meet the needs of MBIE.
