The Senior Financial Accountant (Reporting) is responsible for ensuring the completeness and integrity of all MBIE external reporting information to stakeholders. The Senior Financial Accountant (Reporting) will bring technical expertise to the External Reporting team, ensuring MBIE meets its statutory responsibilities and receives consistent and high quality advice and support.

Personal specifications

  • Proven experience in financial accounting in a medium to large organisation.
  • Experience in Crown Financial Information System.
  • Experience responding to Official Information Act requests and Parliamentary Questions.
  • Experience in financial reporting and the completion of entity financial statements.
  • Demonstrated problem analysis skills and sound judgement.
  • Demonstrated communication, facilitation, influencing and interpersonal skills, with the ability to clearly communicate technical information in plain language.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and effectively manage risks to maximise outcomes.
  • A demonstrable commitment to improving financial management.
  • Proven ability to develop trust and credibility with managers and staff.

Pre requisites

  • Tertiary qualification in accounting.
  • CA qualified with 3 to 5 years post CA experience.
  • Must consent to and satisfactorily complete a credit check.
  • Must have the right to live and work in New Zealand.

Delivery and results

  • Delivery of specialist Financial Accounting services that actively support and contribute to the achievement of the Ministry’s outcomes and that deliver to the needs of internal and external stakeholders:
    • Undertaking departmental and non-departmental financial reporting, including ensuring accounting policies and practices are in line with instructions and generally accepted accounting principles.
    • Providing support to managers and Finance and Performance staff to ensure complex financial reporting is undertaken in line with accounting policy and procedures.
    • Completion of month end and year end external reporting. Ensuring information is understood and completed on a timely basis.
    • Coordinating Finance and Performance responses to annual review, select committee, Official Information Act requests and Parliamentary Questions to ensure accurate and consistent information is reported. Providing additional support for complex and significant requests.
    • Manage and build relationships with relevant teams across MBIE, such as Ministerial Services.
    • Assisting with the coordination of internal and external audits.
  • Ensure all processes are documented and regularly reviewed/updated.
  • Seek opportunities for continuous improvement in the area of financial reporting.
  • Support, mentor and train other members of the External Reporting team and the wider Finance and Performance group to improve financial reporting practice across MBIE.
  • Work collaboratively across Finance and Performance and other MBIE teams to deliver quality outcomes.
  • Finance issues and risks have been successfully understood, managed and mitigated.
  • As business needs require it may be necessary for the role to perform duties of other Financial Accountants in the Finance and Performance Team.

  • Provision of operational support and guidance on all Finance and Performance systems, including ad-hoc internal stakeholder support and instruction to ensure operation in alignment with MBIE policies and procedures.

  • Relationships with external agencies and stakeholders enhance the integrity and credibility of the Ministry.
  • Works collaboratively with colleagues across Finance and Performance to ensure that Financial Control services forms part of a cohesive shared services experience for business managers.
