MBIE’s Senior Advisors (level 1) Data and Information are responsible for:

  • Stewardship - they deliver work to reduce risk, maximise the value of information and data and to enable safe and ethical use of data and information across MBIE.
  • Design - they improve MBIE's information, data and insights services and products, design approaches to lift MBIE’s data capability and promote a culture that is data-driven and evidence-based.
  • Communication - they develop trusted advice and guidance on data and information, and they work with a range of people to help build a shared strategic vision for the future and respond to immediate challenges.

Their day to day work and activities will vary depending on the team.

Role specific competencies

Knowledge and developing expertise in one or more of the following professional areas:

  • Data and information governance including stewardship, regulatory requirements, policy design and governance frameworks.
  • Data management including documentation, metadata, standards, systems design, data quality and business intelligence.
  • Information management including public records management, library collections, document management, information services and regulatory frameworks.
  • Data analysis including solving complex problems with efficient and reproducible analytics, data modelling tools and methodologies and data visualisation.
  • Research methods including qualitative and quantitative methods, ethics, survey management and managing outsourced experts.
  • Understanding of the evolving data system and the role of data-enabled information.
  • Excellent communication skills, written and oral.

  • A proactive, can-do attitude with great initiative, judgement and discretion.
  • A collaborative and action-oriented approach.
  • Ability to perceive, communicate and adopt new ways of looking at problems.
  • Ability to assimilate new information or areas of work.
  • Understanding of MBIE and where the team fits in delivering outcomes for the Ministry.
  • Ability to prioritise and juggle multiple tasks for a range of customers.
  • Strong teamwork and collaboration skills to build relationships with team members and diverse stakeholders.
  • Strong understanding of Crown responsibilities under te Tiriti o Waitangi, knowledge of te reo Māori and Māori Data Sovereignty principles.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to develop and maintain effective relationships.
  • Previous public sector experience is preferred but not essential.

Qualification

  • Relevant tertiary qualification in a related area (desirable).

Requirements

  • Must have the legal right to live and work in New Zealand.

Core activities and tasks

  • Shapes, plans and manages initiatives and projects that enhance MBIE’s data and information capability and collaboration across MBIE data stewards, custodians and business owners.
  • Delivers support for tasks and solutions to MBIE-wide challenges, including managing the implementation of data and information projects.
  • Develops and implements frameworks and standards to improve data and information quality, consistency and relevance across MBIE.
  • Leads the delivery of information services including sourcing, managing, collating and providing information to MBIE people.
  • Monitors and logs the details of advice and services requested using assigned systems.
  • Ensures the quality and consistency of advice and practices across information and data disciplines.
  • Develops guidance on data culture and the use of data, information and insights.
  • Promotes and monitors the availability and use of data and information by internal and external decision makers and customers.
  • Applies critical and analytical thinking to understand and address problems and identify solutions.
  • Supports and develops continuous improvement and innovation to MBIE’s data and information existing practices.
  • This role exists in a variety of teams across MBIE, the focus will depend on the work of your team.

  • Applies own knowledge and works with minimal guidance on what is required and with supervision on new, difficult, or unusual assignments.
  • Applies project planning and management techniques to effectively to carry out the agreed work, using initiative to resolve most conflicts, manage risks and coordinate work with others.
  • Is well organised, plans systematically, regularly monitors and reports on progress towards achievement of plans and strategies.
  • Manages multiple pieces of work concurrently and actively plans and manages workload.

  • Maintains relationships across the branch and with stakeholders with a variety of MBIE functions and teams
