MBIE’s Research and Data Analysts are responsible for:
- Analysis – they analyse data to produce insights using appropriate methodologies and tools, for a range of stakeholders.
- Research and Evaluation – they contribute to projects by applying research methodologies to address topics and inform advice.
- Communication - they provide trusted advice and guidance that is clear, accurate and compelling.
Their day-to-day work and activities will vary depending on the team.

Role specific competencies
Technical skills in one or more of the following professional areas:
- Data management and analysis including solving complex problems with efficient and reproducible analytics; statistical/econometric modelling; data visualisation; and statistical/econometric modelling, inference and forecasting/prediction in domains such as complex surveys and time series.
- Research methods including qualitative and quantitative methods, ethics, survey management, managing outsourced experts, using the New Zealand Integrated Data Infrastructure etc.
- Evaluation including design and implementation of monitoring and evaluation frameworks and projects, and selection of appropriate approaches and methods.
Personal specifications
- A proactive, can-do attitude with great initiative, judgement and discretion.
- Ability to perceive, communicate and adopt new ways of looking at problems.
- Strong teamwork and collaboration skills to build relationships with team members and diverse stakeholders.
- Communicates effectively to diverse team members, clients and stakeholders.
- Understanding of Crown responsibilities under te Tiriti o Waitangi, knowledge of te reo Māori and Māori Data Sovereignty principles.
- Previous public sector experience is preferred but not essential.
Qualification
- Relevant tertiary qualification in a related area (desirable).

Core activities and tasks
- Leads, scopes, shapes, plans and manages research and analytical projects.
- Applies appropriate analytical and research methodologies, frameworks and methods of analysis to identify problems, analyse issues and assess strategies.
- Uses a range of evidence including data, research and other information from range of sources to provide the foundation for evidence-based analysis.
- Proactively engages clients and stakeholders to shape MBIE projects, including in developing of viable options; analysis and evaluation, and monitoring and reviewing processes.
- Contributes to and supports others in the development of policy advice, briefings, research issues for internal clients, Ministers, Cabinet, Parliamentary Select Committees and other stakeholders.
- Provides support for tasks and solutions for MBIE-wide challenges, including supporting the implementation of new data and insights projects.
- Contributes to development and implementation of frameworks and standards that improve data and insights quality, consistency and relevance across MBIE.
- Supports continuous improvement and innovation to MBIE’s analytical, research and evaluation approaches.
