Offshore renewable energy

Offshore renewable energy is energy generated from a renewable source, such as wind, sunlight, waves or tidal currents, using developments located in, on, or under the sea.

The Offshore Renewable Energy Act 2026 came into effect in July 2026 and supports the development of offshore renewable energy projects, such as offshore wind farms.

The offshore renewable energy regime is governed by the Offshore Renewable Energy Act 2026, which provides the legislative framework for the exploration and development of offshore renewable energy projects in New Zealand.

Our engagement with Māori holders of rights and interests has been an important part of developing the offshore renewable energy regime and will remain a priority.

Public consultation has played a key role in developing the offshore renewable energy regime and it will continue to be a priority.
