Tourism Policy Statement sets future direction

Published: 25 June 2026

The Government has released a national Tourism Policy Statement, setting a clear direction for the long-term success of New Zealand’s tourism sector.

Tourism is New Zealand’s second-largest export earner and plays a key role in supporting jobs, businesses, and local economies around the country.

As more visitors choose New Zealand, it is essential that our tourism system is set up for growth in a way that is sustainable and allows us to deliver consistent and high-quality visitor experiences.

The Tourism Policy Statement sets out how government and partners in the sector will work together to set priorities, take action and respond to change.

It clarifies roles and responsibilities, supporting a more coordinated approach and giving regions, iwi, councils, industry and investors greater certainty about the direction of travel for tourism, helping public and private investors plan and invest with confidence.

The statement sets out a number of actions across a range of policy objectives. Working with industry, the Government will prioritise and implement these in the coming years.
