MBIE stands up Gas Security Response Group

Published: 10 May 2024

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has today convened the first meeting of the Gas Security Response Group.

The Group has been set up at the direction of Cabinet to identify and respond to any issues around gas security of supply.

The Group brings together 14 members across government entities, upstream producers, downstream retailers and principal consumers.

“While gas has been tight for some time, recent forecasts from the Gas Industry Company (GIC) suggest it is, or may become, materially tighter than anticipated,” said Paul Stocks, Chair of the Group and Deputy Secretary of Building, Resources and Markets.

“The Gas Security Response Group will coordinate a response to reports of an increasingly tight gas supply from the GIC and the broader gas sector. It will verify gas supply and demand and identify actions to address the situation.”

The Group has also released its Terms of Reference, setting out the Group’s objectives and MBIE’s role as Chair.

The Group will not be providing any public updates while it undertakes its work. The Minister for Energy and the Minister for Resources will report back to Cabinet on the Group’s progress in the coming weeks.
