Freedom Camping Act 2011: Review of transitional period for privately owned vehicles discussion document
This report outlines the performance and status of the 10 initial IVL projects in year 2 of the IVL programme (1 July 2020 to 30 June 2021) – 6 in the conservation portfolio and 4 in the tourism portfolio.
Law changes relating to the Self-contained Motor Vehicles Legislation Act and its Regulations are complete. The final change was made in early 2025 with the transitional period for private vehicles extended to 7 June 2026.
The Government is investing in regional economic growth and sustainable tourism by supporting the installation of e-bike charging stations on 2 New Zealand cycle trails, with more regions set to benefit through an upcoming second funding round.
Regional tourism organisations will receive a total of $3 million to attract more international visitors to regional New Zealand this year.
In 2023, the Government passed a new law for self-contained vehicles to better manage the impacts of freedom camping on our communities and environment.
The Government is moving forward with recommendations from the Tourism Data Leadership Group, including establishing a new Tourism Data Partnership Fund.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) are seeking feedback on whether to extend the transitional period for privately owned, self-contained vehicles in the Freedom Camping Act beyond 7 June 2025.
The first phase of the Tourism Industry Transformation Plan (ITP) focused on enabling Better Work for the tourism industry.
The second phase of the Tourism ITP focused on the environment and tourism.
