Crown Research Institute platforms

In 2017 we transferred $193 million of funding per year from Crown Research Institute (CRI) core funding into 16 Strategic Science Investment Fund (SSIF) science platforms across the 7 CRIs.

The 7 CRIs are:

The CRI platforms are aligned to the core purpose of each CRI and support the unique and deep capability that each CRI has in main research areas. Our SSIF contracts with the CRIs run from 1 July 2017 to 30 June 2024. In 2022, MBIE agreed to extend these contracts to 30 June 2026. Through the CRIs, the SSIF currently funds the following CRI platforms:

  • Agri-food production
  • Premium agri-foods
  • Geological resources
  • Geological processes and hazards
  • Nuclear and isotope science
  • Human and environmental health
  • Forensic science
  • Land-based ecosystems
  • Enhancing land use
  • Marine environment
  • Freshwater environment
  • Climate and weather hazards
  • Plant-based food and seafood production
  • Premium plant-based and seafood products
  • Forest systems
  • Manufactured products from trees.

Manaaki Whenua Landcare Research

Manaaki Whenua receives $17.4 million per year for 2 science platforms - Land-based ecosystems and Enhancing land use.

NIWA

The National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA) receives $42.7 million per year for 3 science platforms - Marine environment, Freshwater environment, and Climate and weather hazards.

Plant and Food Research

Plant and Food Research receives $42.7 million per year for 2 science platforms – Plant-based food and seafood production and Premium plant-based and seafood products.

Scion

Scion receives $23.4 million per year for 2 science platforms – Forest systems and Manufactured products from trees.
