Tēnei tūranga – About the role
The Advisor position provides advice and contributes to the operations of the team. The team is responsible for providing consultative advice to managers and operational services liaising internally across the group and with external providers to meet business needs.
The Advisor is responsible for ensuring quality and consistency of advice and practices in relation to their role. This highly collaborative role will provide advice across the work programme of the team and co-ordination across a wide range of operational priorities to ensure SBS develops and maintains high quality, innovative and user-centric practices.
May lead or support project work as appropriate.
Key Relationships
As an advisor in SBS you will be introduced to several key stakeholders and have a willingness to learn how to engage with each audience and build a working relationship across our partners, including:
- SBS unit.
- Business and Consumer Branch/ TWSD Group.
- Other branches of MBIE.
- Other Government Departments and Agencies.
- Relevant Ministers Offices.
- External non-Government partners.

Advisor Personal specifications
- Ability and willingness to learn and take on advice and guidance.
- Strong interest in developing an understanding of processes and building understanding of machinery of government - key conduit for team on procurement, finance, memos, templates etc.
- Understanding of all core systems including HR, financial, productivity tools.
- Experience and a proven track record in supporting work programmes.
- Demonstrates judgement, integrity and discretion.
- Good written and verbal communication skills including writing in a formal environment.
- Experience in developing and maintaining credible, respected relationships with stakeholders.
- Understands the basic principles of marketing, and tools used by the organisation for planning, implementing, and monitoring marketing activities.
- Adaptable and willing to pivot in accordance with changing priorities.
- Level of self-awareness on skills, experience, and areas of development.
- Attention to detail, time management and prioritisation.
- Demonstrates appropriate level of ownership and accountability.
- Relevant tertiary qualifications or work experience for the role described within.

Unique Statement – Advisor Contracts
The Advisor Contracts works with the Senior Advisor Contracts and the wider team to track contract deliverables and ensure milestones and KPIs are met. The Advisor undertakes supervised project work while also working closely with contracted partners to:
- Ensure contract obligations are met.
- Including effectively supporting contract partners such as the Regional Business Partner Network.
- Be responsible for ensuring timely processing of contracts, purchase orders and invoices.
As part of this the Advisor Contracts is expected to be able to maintain working relationships with both internal and external partners and subject matter experts, as a representative of Small Business Services.
The Advisor will understand, be able to articulate, and manage their work, to support the principles of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. They will follow guidelines to ensure their work is accessible to all, and meets all accessibility requirements, with specific consideration given to Māori engagement.
The Advisor Contracts works with the Principal and Senior Advisors and the wider team to ensure the contracted services are well delivered quality-controlled and timely, areas for improvement identified, and insights are shared with appropriate internal and external stakeholders.
