Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTEs)

Discontinued data series
The Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTEs, 2016–2020) have been discontinued and are retained for reference only. Production of this series ended following significant data disruptions caused by COVID 19.
After 2020, MBIE published an interim measure, the Tourism Electronic Card Transactions (TECT). From January 2023 onwards, tourism spending is measured using a revised Monthly Regional Tourism Estimates (MRTE) series, which uses a new methodology and is released on an ongoing monthly basis.
The revised MRTE series fully replaces both the 2016–2020 MRTEs and the TECT measures. Results from the discontinued series are not directly comparable with the revised MRTEs.
