The next step in Aotearoa New Zealand’s digital journey

Published: 15 September 2022

The Government has released Te Rautaki Matihiko mō Aotearoa – The Digital Strategy for Aotearoa, setting out a vision and plan to support New Zealand’s people, communities, economy, and environment to flourish and prosper in the digital era.

The Strategy and supporting Action Plan provide an overarching framework for how to shape Aotearoa New Zealand’s digital future.

A range of existing work is already underway, and the Strategy will act as a central focal point to better understand the steps needed with communities and industry, and the investment ahead for New Zealand’s digital journey.

The Strategy is framed around 3 key pillars:

  • Mahi Tika (Trust) - People, communities and organisations are comfortable and confident when they are using, or subject to, digital and data-driven technologies.
  • Mahi Tahi (Inclusion) - Having the tools, skills, access, and confidence to participate in an increasingly digital society.
  • Mahi Ake (Growth) - Focussing on both the value of our domestic tech or ICT sector as well as the huge contribution digital technologies can make right across the economy.

The focus areas in the Strategy will strengthen the foundations for a more resilient future, with opportunities for higher value jobs for all New Zealanders, globally successful businesses that are sustainable and exports that have a lower emissions footprint.

This is a living Strategy that will continue to evolve and change with technology, helping to adapt to new issues and opportunities.
