Support for Matariki events in Te Waipounamu South Island

Published: 11 March 2022

Two exciting events in Te Waipounamu South Island with a focus on Matariki are the latest recipients of investment and support from the Creative and Cultural Events Incubator.

The events will help build national pride and celebrate Aotearoa New Zealand’s diverse culture and our unique place in the world.

Matariki Mackenzie is a brand new, multi-day event co-designed with mana whenua, which will leverage the Mackenzie region’s status as the world’s largest Dark Sky Reserve to celebrate the Māori New Year. The event aims to celebrate Matariki authentically and appropriately.

Feast Matariki is an annual, two-week long event in its third year, and is a Matariki-focussed food festival developed by Ngai Tahu and Eat NZ. It is arranged around a series of marae-based events and wānanga in a range of locations throughout Te Waipounamu South Island, and seeks to connect the original food stories of Aotearoa New Zealand with local ingredients, landscapes and people.

The Creative and Cultural Events Incubator fund plays an important role in supporting the growth of new and developing events that celebrate and profile Māori arts and culture, and that of our Pacific communities.
