Two survey reports published today provide insights into Aotearoa New Zealand’s research, science, and innovation workforce.

Two survey reports published today provide insights into Aotearoa New Zealand’s research, science, and innovation workforce.

One survey was targeted towards individuals and the other towards organisations. Both surveys were held between November 2021 and March 2022.

Themes from the survey include:

  • Māori and Pacific people are underrepresented across the research, science, and innovation workforce, including in senior roles
  • while the majority of the workforce is female, women are underrepresented in senior roles
  • temporary contract arrangements are particularly common at universities and in some situations, this can lead to job insecurity, reduced performance and other negative effects on personal lives
  • the key challenges facing the sector are a lack of diversity and insufficient funding.

The responses to each survey will help us to better understand the characteristics of the research, science and innovation workforce and the key challenges facing them and the sector. Understanding these characteristics and challenges will help us to make the research, science, and innovation sector a better place to work by informing the Te Ara Paerangi – Future Pathways programme.
