MBIE announces new Financial Markets Authority Board appointments

Published: 28 February 2022

The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has today confirmed the appointment of 3 new members of the Financial Markets Authority Board, along with the reappointment of a current board member.

The Governor-General, on the recommendation of Minister of Commerce and Consumer Affairs, Dr David Clark, has appointed Kendall Flutey, Mark Weenink and Steven Bardy as the newest members of the Financial Markets Authority (FMA) Board for a term of 5 years, starting from 1 March 2022.

Current board member Vanessa Stoddart has also been reappointed for a term of 2 years. Vanessa’s considerable governance experience will help the FMA ensure continuity during this transitional period.

The FMA Board must consist of not fewer than 5, and not more than 9 members, who are appointed by the Governor-General on the recommendation of the Minister.

Considerable time has been taken to consider the diversity of the FMA Board. A range of factors, including ethnicity and age, were considered, with Ms Flutey’s strong connection to Māori and young New Zealanders, as well as geography and knowledge, with Mr Bardy and Mr Weenink both having international experience and a wealth of industry knowledge. With the newest board members, the gender mix of the FMA Board will be 5 men and 4 women.
