Govt welcomes final report on building supplies market study

Published: 07 December 2022

The residential building supplies market study was launched in November 2021 to look into competition in this sector and today the Commerce Commission has released its final report.

The Commission’s findings confirm that competition for the supply of key building supplies is not working as well as it could in this sector, and that improved competition would contribute to more safe, durable, healthy and affordable homes for New Zealanders. To address its findings, the Commission has made a number of recommendations aimed at improving competition.

The Government has announced today that it welcomes the Commission’s findings and will immediately start exploring the report’s recommendations, to understand what changes may be necessary to bring about better outcomes for the benefit of consumers. A Government response is expected in March 2023.

This is the third market study of its kind in New Zealand. It follows the retail grocery sector market study.
