Our senior leadership team works collaboratively to set and guide our strategic direction.
We deliver a diverse mix of initiatives to help people, sectors and regions thrive and adapt to changing national and global environments.
Our senior leadership team consists of the Secretary (Chief Executive), 8 deputy secretaries, and the Chief Advisor to the Secretary. They are responsible for MBIE’s organisational strategy, Te Ara Amiorangi, and the achievement of MBIE’s strategic outcomes, including the ongoing stewardship of MBIE, its people, systems and functions.
The Digital Economy and and Communications portfolio was replaced by Media and Communications following the 2023 election.
The Ministry of Business, Innovation, and Employment (MBIE) published an Interim Hydrogen Roadmap (the Interim Roadmap) on 9 August 2023 to test initial positions and proposed actions, on the role of hydrogen as part of New Zealand’s energy transition.
MBIE has a diverse range of policy and service delivery responsibilities, with a significant influence on the economic success of Aotearoa New Zealand and the broader economic, social and environmental wellbeing of its people. We lead 13 portfolios across 3 Votes (seen below), we manage 18 regulatory systems and are responsible for over 115 acts.
MBIE manages board appointment processes for a large number of Crown entities, Crown entity companies, statutory bodies and advisory boards on behalf of responsible Ministers.
Titles of documents the Minister for Digital Economy and Communications received from MBIE in 2020.
New Zealand’s gene technology rules are being updated to match scientific and technological advancements.
