Business Registries (NZ Companies Office) is a sub-branch of the Market Integrity Branch of Te Whakatairanga Service Delivery Group, MBIE. Business Registries is the authoritative source of information about a variety of entities, securities over personal property, and financial products. We are the guardians of New Zealand's core business information through the Companies and NZBN register and play a crucial role in building trust and confidence in our economy, helping to make New Zealand a place where doing business is easy, transparent and fair.

The Senior Reporting Analyst leads the design, implementation, maintenance and administration of the Business Registries intelligence environment. The environment includes reporting, analysis and delivery of information, particularly across the Companies Office and the New Zealand Business Number programme. Information provided from the reporting team supports both internal and external clients.

The Senior Reporting Analyst is the business lead in developing and owning a data strategy. They lead the strategic thinking in identifying data issues and opportunities that deliver to the overarching strategy. They are the business lead in key projects such as the migration into the MBIE Datamart.

This role also plays a leadership role within the Reporting Team, taking ownership of the workflow across the team, and they contribute to the development of developing colleagues.  
The role is responsible for ensuring quality and consistency of advice and practices in relation to their team’s work.

A thorough technical knowledge of MBIE’s specialist reporting tools, programmes and registry databases is required. The role is part of a geographically distributed team spanning Auckland, Wellington, and Christchurch.

Personal specifications

  • A proven track record of experience and achievement in an analytical role, utilising complex information.
  • Ability to understand the ‘bigger picture’ business strategy and to create sub-strategies and plans to contribute to it.
  • Wide ranging knowledge of systems and tools for reporting.  
  • Specific experience with Business Objects tools including Universe design and build, reports development and creating of reporting dashboards.
  • Ability to analyse data requirements and design solutions using appropriate business intelligence tools.
  • Excellent relationship management skills, with the ability to communicate appropriately and effectively with stakeholders at all levels of the organisation.
  • Highly organised with good time and task management skills and the ability to manage multiple priorities and demands from a range of stakeholders.
  • Strong commitment to providing outstanding client service and public value for money.
  • Working knowledge of public sector processes.
  • Actively identifies potential to broaden or deepen existing expertise.
  • Tertiary qualification, preferably in information management, systems development, statistics, computer science or other relevant discipline, and/or extensive and comparable relevant experience.
  • Must have the ability to work in New Zealand.

Data and reporting

The Senior Reporting Analyst is required to deliver results in the following areas:

  • Extract data from various register databases through the use of specialist technical reporting tools.
  • Produce regular and on-demand reports for the unit, particularly Companies Office and the New Zealand Business Number Programme, as well as for wider internal stakeholders and external clients. This includes, when required, written analysis to accompany data sets.
  • Identify data or information requirements, assessing existing registry data sources, and develop new reports where necessary.
  • Undertake structured analysis of information, e.g. producing internal and/or external “dashboards”.
  • Works with relevant subject matter experts to ensure business context is appropriately considered and incorporated in reporting where required.
  • Analyse problems by collecting available data, eliciting additional information, shifting out irrelevancies and constructing an accurate picture of the situation.
  • Lead the development of a reporting framework where reports are relevant, informative and produced in a timely manner.
  • Lead the administration, maintenance and enhancement of the reporting infrastructure.
  • Evaluate solutions critically on the basis of logical assumptions, factual information, resource constraints and Ministry’s values, and chooses the appropriate solution.
  • Business lead and owner of the Business Registries Data Strategy.
  • Presents and expresses ideas effectively in a range of contexts and settings, adjusting style and language to the context and the message.
  • Uses persuasion and influencing skills to gain acceptance of ideas.
  • Written material uses a range of tools to convey style and tone.

Stakeholder management

  • Participates as an active team member and contributes knowledge and expertise needed to achieve Business Registries and MBIE’s outcomes.
  • Develops effective working relationships with other managers and staff in order to transfer knowledge and learning from the team to the wider organisation.
  • Builds and maintains effective relationships and partnerships with internal and external stakeholders, as necessary, in order to identify and share best practice information and to promote the Ministry, its products and services.
  • Represents whole-of-Ministry views and protects its reputation in any external interactions.
